Charice’s Love Affair – KAILAN February 14, 2010

The much awaited and anticipated Valentine’s Concert finally came. Competing against a number of Valentine’s concerts presented by other local artists, but with a ticket price tag only a few international entertainers would dare set, Charice and Maestro Ryan Cayabyab pulled off a very successful evening of entertainment for cupid’s day. The venue was definitely meant to give the audience top comfort and the repertoire lined up and diligently prepared for by the whole cast of singers which was masterfully directed by Mr. Ryan Cayabyab, left the audience with all smiles and no complaints about the expensive evening. And should one dare inquire about this aspect, the response would surely be, “it was more than worth it”.

The impressive and sort of intimidating facilities and equipment, the excellent acoustic environment just took away every bit of possible technical glitch or mishap that could possibly have hindered the excellent delivery of pure entertainment to be given by Charice, Ryan Cayabyab and the carefully selected presenters of each song. Targeting the very wide range of music lovers, the concert delivered a spectacular array of songs from the classical and opera, to standards, r and b, popular and contemporary, covering eras of the 60’s to the latest of 2010’s, with a sprinkle of Italian, a dash of Filipino to the main course of English delights. Not to be missed of course were the signature songs which introduced Charice to the international entertainment world, which were complemented by the Original Pilipino Music written by Ryan and Alcasid and other outstanding Filipino composers. In sum, a very healthy and pleasant mix of what the Filipino audience would appreciate.

A certain song though stood out, which makes those who know Charice’s life story and her enigmatic relationship with the Filipinos, reflect and sort of feel sad but then at the same time smile, because despite this dilemma, clearly, Charice has overcome whatever obstacles have been put before her in her quest to stardom. Despite all the obvious disadvantages and challenges, fate has been kind and generous in providing her with more than what she needs to overcome these hindrances in her journey to reach her goals. She has accomplished and achieved every possible goal and so much more, except for one small, inconsequential aspect which ironically happens to be closest to her heart.

The song is “Kailan” by MYMP (Make Your Momma Proud), thanks to Mr. Hilario for the translation, may very well describe Charice’s efforts to win the recognition, respect and love of her countrymen as a singer and entertainer. This was her original dream and goal when she first started out and realized that she could be as good as her idols Sarah G. and Regine V. That’s all she really wanted actually, aside from being able to help her mother feed the family and secure a safe place to rest at night. But never did they give it to her. She was always treated just like another aspiring talent, still trying to make it in the entertainment world. She’d get shoved and crammed in lineups with the rest of the hopefuls with an allocated time to show what she’s got and no matter what she shows, never did she get the acknowledgement or recognition for her extra ordinary talent. It took the attention and recognition from other foreign countries such as Korea, Sweden, America, England, Italy and Singapore before the Philippines started just to wonder why and what was so special about Charice.

In all her interviews, Charice undeniably admits that Filipinos are the hardest audience for her to please. She gets very nervous and anxious when she performs before her own countrymen. “WHY AM I AFRAID EACH TIME I SEE YOU?” There would be times that Charice would get invited to the local TV shows, but gets no special treatment and at times gets the bum end of the stick. “HOW MANY TIMES HAVE WE BUMPED INTO EACH OTHER AND YOU WOULD SOMETIMES PICK UP MY BOOKS? BUT YOU WOULD NOT TELL ME YOUR NAME. EVERYDAY I FOLLOW YOU BUT YOU WOULD NOT EVEN GLANCE BACK…WHAT MUST I DO?” They recognized and presented awards and titles to the other entertainers. Even Charice’s best friend, who, because of her, got invited to the Ellen DeGeneres Show, got a Presidential award. “WHY ARE YOU AVOIDING ME? DO I HAVE SCARS ON MY LEGS? I JUST WANT TO INTRODUCE MYSELF TO YOU.” Is Charice too short for them? Not pretty enough? Not rich enough? Despite this undermining and detractions and crabby comments she gets, Charice always obliged the invitations and gladly performed according to their rules and their whims. “I HAVE A SPECIAL CORNER RESERVED HERE IN MY HEART FOR YOU. MAY I INTRODUCE MYSELF TO YOU? WHEN, WHEN WILL YOU NOTICE MY LITTLE SECRET? NO MATTER WHAT I DO, YOU DON’T SEEM TO NOTICE”. Charice has, for some time now, been very much involved in charity organizations for the education and future of less fortunate, endangered and underprivileged children, civic and ecology rehab advocacy organizations in the Philippines. She has also been very active in the charitable and fund raising activities for education and welfare of the deserving and less fortunate in the US. She is also the Ambassador of the charity medical organization for the children with facial deformities and handicaps (SMILE), She has brought pride and recognition to her country from all over the world as she graces and performs and awes the audiences at popular and renowned international occasions and proudly proclaims that she is Filipino and portrays an excellent model of youth and extra ordinary talent. “WHEN? WHEN WILL YOU EMBRACE MY ANXIOUSLY WAITING HEART? NO MATTER WHAT AFFECTION I GIVE, YOU STILL DO NOT NOTICE.” YOU STILL DO NOT NOTICE!”

This song somehow made me realize that Charice is definitely ready for love. The most difficult kind of love. A love that is greater than what regular boys and girls commonly know during this month of Valentine’s. Charice is in love and is still dealing with her love partner, the Filipinos. And this is her love affair. Bitter-sweet and noble but sad. My heart truly bleeds and cries out when I think of this love affair. Charice’s love affair with the Filipinos. Her true and original love.
